Nick Foles, Super Bowl MVP, Philadelphia Eagles

Super Bowl XLII MVP Nick Foles has had a unique football journey, defined in part by its peaks and valleys. However, Nick nearly never made it to this point in his career, as he briefly lost his love for the game and seriously contemplated retirement two years ago. When his devotion to football began to waver, Nick was guided by the two most important things in his life – family and faith.

Following a stellar career at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, Nick was a three-year starter at the University of Arizona. He became the Wildcats’ all-time leader in passing yards and was subsequently drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. In his second season, Nick produced one of the best statistical performances by a quarterback, throwing for 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions over 13 games. That year, Nick also tied the NFL record with seven touchdown passes in a single game. He continued his stellar play in the Pro Bowl, where he was named Offensive MVP. Despite this sensational season, Nick’s path thereafter was anything but smooth.

After breaking his collarbone in 2014, Nick was traded to the St. Louis Rams. Following a disappointing one-year stint with the team, Nick began to question whether he still loved the game – so much so that he went months without even picking up a football. Nick’s wife, Tori, wrote him a heartfelt letter that challenged him to grow and face his fears and failures. This, coupled with Nick’s prayers for guidance, led him to take a leap of faith and return to the gridiron.

Reuniting with his first NFL coach, Andy Reid, in Kansas City, Nick regained his love for football. It was a special season for Nick, but bigger things were in store when he chose to return to the Eagles in 2017. After starting quarterback Carson Wentz went down with a season-ending injury, Nick led the team to the playoffs and impressive victories over the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings. Nick saved his best for the biggest stage, however, throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns (and even catching a touchdown on the memorable “Philly Special” play) to defeat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII and capture the game’s MVP.

The morning after the Super Bowl, Nick was asked about his career and delivered a response that can resonate with people from all walks of life:

“I think the big thing is don’t be afraid to fail. In our society today, with Instagram and Twitter, it’s a highlight. It’s all the good things. When you look at it, you have a bad day, you think your life isn’t as good, you’re failing. Failure is a part of life. It’s a part of building character and growing. Without failure, who would you be? I wouldn’t be up here if I hadn’t fallen thousands of times, made mistakes. We all are human. We all have weaknesses. Just being able to share that and be transparent.

“I know when people speak and share their weaknesses, I listen. Because I can (relate). I’m not perfect. I’m not Superman. We might be in the NFL and we might have just won the Super Bowl, but we all have daily struggles. That’s where my faith comes in. That’s where my family comes in. I think when you look at a struggle in your life, just know that it’s an opportunity for your character to grow.”

Recognizing that nearly 50% of foster youth do not graduate from high school, in 2013 the Foundation opened Samueli Academy, a free charter high school for community, under-served and foster teens. Orangewood is proud of the 99% graduation rate for Samueli Academy’s first graduating class (the class of 2017), with 97% of students continuing their education in college.

Last year alone Orangewood Foundation scholarships helped 247 former foster youth attend colleges, universities, and graduate programs throughout the United States. In its 36 year history, Orangewood has given thousands of these youth the opportunity to thrive and prosper.
