Each honoree has their own unique way of contributing to society and the award is designed to honor them as individuals for the great work and impact they've had on the rest of us and the inspiration they are.

Jim Kelly, Pro Football Hall of Fame

Jim Kelly exemplifies what toughness is all about. Born on Valentine’s Day, he was raised in the steel town of East Brady, PA with 5 brothers and his hard working dedicated parents. This is where the phrase “Kelly Tough” originated. Those words have now become a way of life.

Jim attended the University of Miami, but in 1982 faced a career threatening injury and was told his football could be over. Not willing to give up, Jim fought his way back and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1983. Buffalo not being his first choice, Jim opted to play for the USFL until they suspended operations in 1986, at which time he returned to his contract with the Bills. This is where he would spend his legendary NFL career which included an unprecedented four straight AFC championships – and four devastating Super Bowl defeats. Jim retired from the NFL following the 1996 season.

At the end of his career, Jim’s dream of having a son came true. Hunter James Kelly was born in 1997 on Valentine’s Day, and daddy’s birthday. Shortly after Hunter was born, he was diagnosed with a fatal genetic disease called Krabbe Leukodystrophy. There is no treatment for the disease and no cure. The average life expectancy for babies diagnosed with infantile Krabbe is fourteen months. This inspired Jim and his wife Jill to start the Hunter’s Hope Foundation, to address the acute need for information and research with respect to Krabbe Disease and related Leukodystrophies. In addition, Hunters Hope strives to support and encourage those afflicted and their families as they struggle to endure, adjust and cope with the demands of these fatal illnesses.

In August of 2002, Jim received the highest honor in football; he was enshrined in the NFL’s Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility. His emotional speech is said to be one of the greatest. Jim paid tribute to his son who was able to be present at the ceremony. Hunter surpassed expectations but on August 5, 2005, after eight courageous years, Hunter went to heaven. Hunter exemplified determination, grace, bravery and joy throughout his brief life and what it truly means to be Kelly Tough.

But Jim Kelly’s obstacles were not going to end there; in June 2013, Jim announced he had been diagnosed with Squamous-Cell Carcinoma of the upper jaw bone. He underwent surgery shortly after and was told by doctors that neither chemotherapy nor radiation would be necessary – he was cancer free. However, less than one year later in March of 2014, his cancer returned. This time surgery was not an option, and Jim received an intensive regimen of radiation and chemotherapy treatments. It is an ongoing battle, but there is no doubt Jim has a true appreciation of life. He believes in the four F’s – Faith, Family, Friends &Fans. He shares his jopurney of perseverance and asks that everyone does their part to Make a Difference Today for Someone Who is Fighting for Their Tomorrow. Although Jim is the definition of Kelly Tough, he knows, that staying tough takes faith in God, and being surrounded by a great team.

David & Holly Wilson

David and Holly Wilson are known for their generosity, compassion, and dedication to family and community. David Wilson is a self-described “Iowa farm boy,” while his wife, Holly, is an Orange County native who has lived her entire life in south Orange County. Both were one of five children and experienced family challenges in their childhoods. David’s family struggled to make ends meet in the small town where he grew up, living in an apartment above a John Deere tractor dealership. David ended up being responsible for his younger siblings while his parents were working several jobs. He held numerous odd jobs himself, including selling pots & pans door to door, pumping gas, selling shoes, and – his least favorite – working in a foundry. Holly’s father died in a car crash when she was just six months old. Tragedy struck the family again when her stepfather died of pancreatic cancer when she was 21.

David and Holly met while driving on Pacific Coast Highway on an Easter Sunday in 1994, and married in 1996 in Laguna Beach. After the birth of their two children, Alexandra and Cameron, Holly devoted herself to being a full-time, hands-on mother. Meanwhile, David focused on his growing and successful automotive dealerships. Today, Wilson Automotive has 19 dealerships and employs nearly 2,000 people, making it one of the largest dealer groups in the U.S. David has received many local and national accolades, including being elected to the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans.

Giving back to their community is a core value for the couple. Over the years, they have supported many causes, especially education and children, in both large and small ways.

Holly is active at her children’s school, has chaired school events and annually hosts a major fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach. She chaired the school book fair every year, and personally bought books for every child who could not afford one. In 2009, she opened the couple’s home for the “Girls Night Out” fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach. The event has been the organization’s largest fundraiser for the past seven years, raising approximately $100,000 annually.

David Wilson has been supporting Orangewood Foundation and the Orangewood Children & Family Center shelter for abused and neglected children (formerly known as the Orangewood Children’s Home) for over 30 years. He served on the Foundation’s board for more than 20 years and is now an emeritus member. David and Toyota of Orange were the originators/sponsors of the 'Round Orange Race, a 10K/5K run with nearly 4,000 participants annually that raised over $250,000 for Orangewood Foundation. In appreciation of David’s generosity to his employees and the community, the David Wilson Endowment Fund was established by his employees and friends to benefit Orangewood. This fund now totals over $1 million and enables worthy Orangewood former foster youth to obtain a college education they would not otherwise be able to afford.

In 2006, Chapman University named its new athletic field after the couple who donated $3 million to the school. In addition to Orangewood Foundation’s board, David is a current or past member of the boards of Chapman University and Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and the couple actively supports the Laguna Beach Education Foundation.

David and Holly live in Laguna Beach with their two children, Alexandra and Cameron. David’s two adult daughters, Christine and Logan, live in Arizona with their families.

Orangewood Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization. Founded in 1981, it is one of the leading providers of services to current and former foster youth in Orange County. Through programs focused on basic needs, housing, life skills & employment, and education, the Foundation prepares foster and community youth to reach their greatest potential. Recognizing that nearly 50% of foster youth do not graduate from high school, in 2013 the Foundation opened Samueli Academy, a free charter high school for community, under-served and foster teens.

Last year alone Orangewood Foundation scholarships helped 260 former foster youth attend colleges and universities throughout the United States. Beyond its programs, for thousands of foster youth, Orangewood means "family," "opportunity" and "hope." In its 35 year history, Orangewood has given thousands of these youth the opportunity to thrive and prosper.
